OUT OF ACTION
Some muscle cars are bought by loving owners who pamper them like members of the family. Other muscle cars, though, aren’t so lucky. Some get stolen, smashed or thrashed. Some get parked and lost under a layer of dust in an old shed, others get left outside to brave the elements and slowly rust away. Sad, but true.
We eyeball plenty of beautifully maintained and/or fully restored muscle classics in AMC, but as serious car pervs we have to admit there’s few things more intriguing – or exciting – than spotting an old classic in a paddock, or a shed, or under a shady tree, that’s seen better days and in need of some TLC. Some are beyond saving, but they all have a story to tell.
So, get out your cameras and start snapping some old muscle cars you come across in your travels that are definitely Out of Action, or close to it. We don’t want to know where they are and we won’t be publishing specific locations, because above all we must respect people’s privacy. We just want to see some good, clean pics of these forgotten cars and short personal stories to go with them. Send your entries to firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to Locked Bag 5555, St Leonards, NSW 2065.
I saw this car in suburban Melbourne and even though I’m a Ford fan I’m still tempted to knock on the door and ask if it’s for sale. In the meantime, it’s doing a great job holding up the back fence! Phil
Here is a 1969 HT Holden Monaro that I got tipped off about that was hiding in a disused factory in central Victoria and I was lucky enough to buy. It is not a GTS but a standard Monaro finished in red exterior and red interior, disc brake front-end and 3-speed manual gearbox. The Monaro was previously owned by a GM-H executive, was then a young guy’s first car before being pulled apart some years earlier. We were able to borrow a forklift from next door and roughly reassemble the old Monaro so that my mates and I could roll it onto the trailer. We had left home early that morning got the Monaro assembled back on its wheels and on the trailer and still made it to the pub for a counter meal. A great day out. Des
