2018-19 Nikon Photo Contest Winners Announced
The 37th running of the biannual Nikon Photo Contest attracted a record 97,369 entries across all three categories from more than 33,000 photographers across 170 countries and regions. This participation makes it one of the biggest photo contests in the world.
Entries were invited in three categories – Open for a single photograph and photo story series on the theme of ‘Change’; Next Generation for a single photograph and photo story on the theme of ‘Identity’; and Short Film on the theme of ‘Hope’.
The winner of the Open category (single image) is Jason Parnell-Brookes from the United Kingdom, and the photo story series winner is Thaib Chaidar (Indonesia). The winner of the Next Generation category (single image) is Sara De Antonio Feu from Spain, the photo story series winner is Tu Jinghan from China. The winner of the Short Film category is Sara Crochet from the USA. These winners were selected by an international panel of judges, headed by world-renowned art director, Neville Brody.
“The Nikon Photo Contest asks a lot of questions,” commented Neville Brody, “and one of the main questions was ‘what is the role of photography in the future?’ The world of photography is continuing to change in our lives, it’s on our phones and it’s everywhere we look. Our world has seen more images than words these days. It’s an international language and it changes and influences the way we are as a people and as a society”.
Nikon Australia Ambassador and renowned sports photographer, Delly Carr, was also on the judging panel for this year’s awards.
Winners of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards from each category were selected based on the image’s relevance to the category’s theme, message, and creativity.
