Online food hack videos are a huge trend at the moment. These snappy one-minute clips help make your cooking easier and, more importantly, faster. I can’t help thinking that my mum was well ahead of this curve back in the early 90s. A whirlwind in the kitchen, mum would create fussy teen-friendly meals in minutes by coming up with the most ingenious tips and tricks. I remember strolling into the kitchen when I got home from school to find her whirling round the kitchen making dinner; a few scored tomatoes sat in a bowl of boiled water to help the skins come off quickly, jacket potatoes getting a head start in the microwave before baking, and ingredients being snipped into pieces with kitchen scissors to save chopping. Not a board or mixing bowl in sight. When time is tight during the week or it’s too hot to be stuck in the kitchen for hours, these are my favourite techniques (inspired by my mum).
