TEN UK FOODIE CITIES

-

Bristol is bursting with restaurants, markets, breweries and bars, with Wapping Wharf the new epicentre. Casamia is where to blow the budget. For a laid-back experience, sip wine at Bar Buvette.

York Find cafés that make the most of local produce, classic tea rooms and international cuisine. Try the ever-changing eight-course tasting menu at La Cochon Aveugl, Skosh’s globe-trotting small plates and kid-friendly The Star Inn the City for breakfast.

Manchester Enjoy craft beers and the ‘curry mile’. Volta in West Didsbury has a laid-back feel and sharp, well executed small plates, North Tea Power serves the city’s best coffee and El Gato Nero is where to eat a Mancunian-madrileño hybrid: morcilla Scotch eggs.

Birmingham Carter’s of Moseley is where to head for Michelin-starred fine dining, especially if you’re vegetarian. A changing rota of street food can be found at Digbeth Dining Club, and if you’re looking for a wine bar, head to Loki.

Hull Stop at The Hull Pie for something hearty encased in pastry, or go to Michelin-starred pub Pipe and Glass for an imaginative approach to British classics. End the day with a dark and stormy at Roots.

Belfast Cosy cafés, stunning seafood and of course, excellent pub grub are the foodie highlights. For brunch, go to The Permit Room and choose between Middle Eastern shakshuka and Ulster Fry. Find Yard Bird for a rotisserie chicken or John Long’s for fish & chips.

Liverpool Catalan classics, fine dining and boss burgers make eating here memorable. Head for glamour and a four-course dinner at The Art School, eat hot wings and burgers at Free State Kitchen or choose one of Jenever’s 70 or so gins for a sharpener.

Glasgow From steaks to vegan pub grub to a police box selling grilled cheese, Glasgow has it all. For breakfast have Turkish eggs at Café Strange Brew, try the chicken shawarma at Riverhill Café for lunch, then treat yourself to the market menu at Cail Bruich.

Bath The farmer’s market is one of the best – visit on Saturday morning. There are two Corkage wine bars to while away a few hours nibbling on small plates, and Menu Gordon Jones is where to head on special occasions for the ‘surprise’ menu.

Edinburgh Modern yet traditional, cool yet unpretentious, Timberyard’s Larder is strictly Scottish but there’s a Scandinavian feel to the decor and food presentation. Try El Cartel for an authentic, lively take on Mexican food and Toast for breakfast or an excellent wine selection and sharing platters.
