Announcing the winners.
WITH AN IMPRESSIVE six projects shortlisted, Sydney firm SJB was the undisputed star of this year’s awards. Taking out the ultimate accolade for their extensive body of work, as well as Best Hospitality Interior for 12-Micron in Barangaroo, the 2017 Belle Coco Republic Interior Designers of the Year showed design ingenuity, sensitivity to their client’s brief and flashes of brilliance and beauty in projects spanning residential, commercial and hospitality sectors: from a compact terrace kitchen to a sprawling CBD shopping precinct. A common thread in this diverse and industrious output was the innovative approach to materials displayed by directors of interior design Jonathan Richards and Kirsten Stanisich, drawing deep connections between interior spaces and their context. “Evocative of place, 12-Micron draws on the colours, tones and textures of a spotted gum to explore a uniquely Sydney interior, with cobblestone floors, floating fabric ceilings and bark-like leather,” they explain. “Beautifully realised, subtle and elegantly luxurious, the space was planned to allow everyone, including staff, spectacular harbour views.” Congratulations to Jonathan, Kirsten and the SJB team on an outstanding suite of projects.
