HOTEL COVELL Designer Sally Breer has nailed it at Hotel Covell with a large dose of imagination and great taste. The five-room boutique experience offers a room for each chapter of fictional author George Covell’s life. Chapter 1 is George as a young struggling writer trying to make his mark in Oklahoma, and progresses to Chapter 5 where he’s a successful author in New York City. I stayed in Chapter 4 which combines George’s collections from his New York days and pieces that he picked up while visiting his lover in Paris. This is not your run-of-the-mill hotel. Firstly there is no room service or concierge but instead, willing, friendly staff who assist your every need. Room sizes are generous to say the least, with vintage furniture, knockout wallpapers, upholstery, green claw-footed bathtubs, and record players. When we arrived we cancelled all plans and just hung out, wishing we had more friends to invite over to our new pad! This is pure magic, fantasy and fabulous design. hotelcovell.com

CHATEAU MARMONT Feel like a rock star and stay here. If you really want to live it up choose a poolside or garden bungalow and book long lunches in the courtyard for star spotting. The interiors hark back to the days of B&W film and you feel as if you’re walking into a glamorous movie set. A lot of fun. chateaumarmont.com

THE ACE DOWNTOWN The restored facade of the 1927 United Artists building fronts the cool interiors by one of my favourite design firms, Commune. A little bit of something for everyone, whether you are staying here or not. There’s Stumptown coffee and an uber cool shop downstairs or head straight to the rooftop, and sit under a cloth-covered ceiling sipping cocktails. acehotel.com/losangeles

LOMBARDI HOUSE If you seek a stay that is more like home but has all the trappings of a hotel, Lombardi House, built in 1904, now boasts four guest apartments with kitchens. The former mansion has the relaxed designs of Amber Interiors and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Steeped in old Hollywood history, the whole house can be rented out. lombardihouse.com
