CONT R I BUTORS

- FIONA STOREY

Fiona photographed a house in South Yarra for Smart Spaces, p112. What was your first impression? Elegant yet strong. Its key features have a masculinity which is balanced with curves and clean lines. It’s beautifully finished. Who/what have been some of your enduring creative influences? Oscar Niemeyer, who was a Brazilian treasure and key figure in modern architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright. I love fashion photographer David Sims. Where is home for you, and what do you love about it? Home is looking across the water in Melbourne, Australia, but also South Africa. I love the big sky, the ancient landscapes and the enduring nature of the people that make both countries so unique. What are some of your favourite local haunts? Sophie Gannon Gallery, the NGV and The Espy (the Esplanade Hotel)! What design item are you coveting right now? Any leather armchair. Right now it’s the ‘Safari’ chair by Kaare Klint or the ‘Falcon’ chair by Sigurd Ressell. What else is inspiring you right now? The Beaumaris Modern, a group who encourage the appreciation and preservation of 1950s, 60s and 70s architecture in Melbourne’s Beaumaris. Find them on Instagram.
