Legging it

The humblest of seats, a stool can be truly uplifting if its design elements, quality and aesthetics align.

JEREMY BULL, principal of Alexander & Co (pictured with Belle interior design editor, Lucy Mccabe) believes comfort, suitability and vision are what to consider when sourcing a stool. “It needs to be easy to sit on, have a footrest, fit within the furniture arrangement spatially and not get uncomfortable too quickly. In venues, they break quickly if not robust, so quality build is essential. And if they don’t suit the brand, they won’t work, so aesthetics are critical. For Park House Food & Liquor in Mona Vale we created a simple and direct stool that was built locally. The square timber frame had a canvas upholstered top and cover that hung down for just the right amount of utility and comfort. No frills. Just the way I’d have it for myself.”
