Melissa Penfold plumps the pillars of creating home comforts.

Now more than ever is the time to embrace the comfort of home.

AS THE DAYS stretch on at home, it’s time to think about creating a warm and cosy sanctuary. Our interiors impact on our mental health in ways we don’t fully understand so the right mix of candles, mirrors, blankets and books can feel downright blissful. Let’s explore the elements of finding comfort in design. TAKE ON TEXTURE Mixing materials, weaves, softness and adding something such as leather can make a space interesting but not visually overwhelming. Do you dread getting out of bed in the morning? Stepping onto a luxuriously soft wool or silk rug might be the answer. PRIORITISE COMFORT Different people prefer varying levels of sofa cushioning. For instance, I like to have cushions that are soft rather than ones that bounce back. However, some folks may desire more support.

STAY ALIGHT Replace any expired globes and fix overhead lighting so it shines where you need it. If you have table lamps, then turn them on for added ambience. SOUND LUXURY If your door hinges squeak, adjust and lubricate them to avoid a daily annoyance. The goal is to eliminate, or at least mask, audible disturbances.

To make your space feel more luxurious, layering it with fabrics, curtains, throws, rugs and cushions will soften the hard lines of architecture, absorb sound and make a room feel rich and promote comfort.

SMELL WELL Try out a room scent you love either in the form of a home-fragrance spray or scented candle. BED DOWN Just a stack of pillows and a duvet make a room look like student digs. For an extra layer of warmth and comfort, add two Euro pillows, a fresh duvet and a lightweight quilt or throw folded at the end of the bed – in the same colours, tones and textures. PRETTY UP Make it beautiful even if you live in a tiny bedsit. A simple bunch of parsley in a vase or a cabbage in an urn can make a statement. Nothing sends us into a slump more than a $25 bunch of lilies in a cylindrical vase. Go for comfort, quality and a dash of individuality. LOVE IS KEY Once you’ve made the big choices, the rest is how you put it together. It takes a lifetime of collecting to finish a room. Quality’s ultimate value is the serenity that comes with style. Buy only what you love, and you’ll be surprised how well it all gels over the years.
