STEP 1 Shovel garden soil into bowl. Remove plants from pots and position on soil. Backfill to half the depth of the pot, and firm down soil.

STEP 2 Sprinkle fertiliser around the plants, pressing it gently into the soil.

STEP 3 Spread a layer of pea gravel to keep the soil in place.

STEP 4 Pour water into the bowl slowly from a bucket. You can add a small goldfish if you like, and a floating plant to protect the fish, and the plant roots, from birds.

STEP 5 Add a drop of vegetable oil to the water to put a film across the surface; this will smother mosquito eggs and stop them hatching.
