From assorted coral prints, cut
36 – 5 x 7 inch rectangles From solid white, cut
12 – 2½ x 42 inch WOF strips for sashing and border 6 – 2½ x 243∕8 inch sashing rectangles

72 – 3½ inch squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 144 large triangles total. From assorted light teal prints, cut

From binding fabric
9 – 2½ inch x WOF strips To foundation piece, stitch fabric pieces to a foundation paper (see p166) with marked side of paper facing up and fabric pieces layered under paper. The resulting pieced unit is a mirror image of the foundation paper. STEP 1 Referring to Diagram 1, cut a coral print 5 x 7 inch rectangle in half diagonally from lower left to upper right to make two position 2 triangles. Repeat with 17 additional assorted coral print rectangles to make 36 position 2 triangles in total. STEP 2 Referring to Diagram 2, cut remaining assorted coral print 5 x 7 inch rectangles in half diagonally from lower right to upper left to make 36 position 3 triangles. STEP 3 Gather a foundation paper Unit A, a solid white 7 inch square position
1, a coral print position 2 triangle, and a coral print position 3 triangle. Foundation-piece in numerical order to make Unit A (Diagram 3). The unit should be 61∕8 inch square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 A units in total. STEP 4 Gather a foundation paper Unit B, a solid white small triangle position 1, a light teal print 1¾ x 6 inch triangle position 2, a medium teal print 1¾ x 6 inch rectangle position 3, a dark teal print 1¾ x 6 inch rectangle position 4, and a solid white large triangle position 5. Foundation-pieceapq in numerical order to make a Unit B (Diagram 4). Repeat to make 72 B units in total. STEP 5 Using C foundation papers, repeat above steps for foundation paper B. Make 72 C units (Diagram 5) .
Assemble HST
STEP 6 Pencil-mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each solid white 6½ inch square. STEP 7 Lay a marked solid white square atop an assorted gold print 6½100651015 inch square. Sew together with two seams, stitching
¼ inch seam on each side of the drawn line (diagram 6). Cut pair apart on drawn line and press open. Repeat to make 36.
Assembling blocks
STEP 8 Lay out 4 HSTS, 4 A units, and 1 solid white 61∕8 inch square, including seam allowances (Diagram 7). Repeat to make 9 blocks. STEP 9 Referring to diagram 8, lay out two B Units and two C Units in pairs. Sew together units in pairs. Sew together units in each pair. Join pairs to make a corner unit. Repeat to make 36 corner units.
STEP 10 Sew corner units to opposite edges of a block centre (Diagram 9). Add corner units to remaining edges to make a block. The block should measure 243∕8 inches square, including the seam allowances. Repeat the instructions to make 9 blocks in total.
Assembling quilt top
STEP 11 Cut and piece solid white 2½ inch x WOF strips to make two – 2½ x 801∕8 inch border strips and four – 2½ x 761∕8 inch sashing strips. STEP 12 Referring to Quilt assembly diagram (below), lay out blocks, solid white 2½ x 243∕8 inch sashing rectangles, and solid white 2½ x 761∕8 inch sashing strips in horizontal rows. Sew together pieces in each block row. Press seams towards sashing. Join rows. Sew white border strips to side edges of joined rows to complete quilt top.
