Fabric requirement
• Red – 5 metres for blocks • White – 5 metres for blocks • 70cm for binding • Backing fabric
Here’s how
STEP 1 Cut 45 white 13 x 13 inch squares. Cut 45 red 13 x 13 inch squares.
STEP 2 Refer to Creating HST instructions and diagram. With right sides together, pair one white square with one red square. Create 90 HST units. STEP 3 Take the HST units and (following Diagram 1) create blocks by cutting the HST unit into 4 equal strips of 3 1/8 th inches. Once the strips are cut invert the strips to match the diagram. Trim long strips to 11 inches long in order as shown in diagram 1, this will give you a square block.
You will end up with a finished block of 11 x 11 inches square 25 x 1A

Cut 11 WOF x 2.5 inch strips. Refer to binding instructions on page 175.

Cutting instructions
To make 42 blocks
Blocks – red fabric
336 – red 2.5 inch squares (to create flying geese unit)
168 – red 2.5 inch squares (to create HST) 168 – red 2.5 inch squares
84 – red 4.5 inch squares – cut in half on diagonal (to create triangles) Total = 7.5 metres
Blocks – white fabric
168 – white 4.5 x 2.5 inch rectangles (to create flying geese unit)
168 – white 2.5 inch squares

Block construction
Per block you will need
4 – white 4.5 x 2.5 inch rectangles
(to create flying geese unit)
8 – red 2.5 inch squares (to create flying geese unit)
4 – red 2.5 inch squares (to create HST) 4 – white 2.5 inch squares (to create HST) 4 – white square 2.5 inch
2 – red 4.5 inch squares – cut in half on diagonal = 4 red triangles
2 – white 2 inch square, cut in half on the diagonal to create triangles (13, 8, 12, 4).
2 – white 2.5 inch square, cut in half on the diagonal to create triangles (1, 3, 8, 11).
4 – red 2.5 inch squares (2, 5, 7, 10)

To make the flying geese units
Lay the white rectangle right side facing up and 1 red 2.5 inch square right side facing down – lining up the left-hand side. Sew a diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right in the middle. Trim the excess fabric. Open and iron flat. Repeat on the right-hand side, laying the red 2.5 inch square on the right-hand side and sewing a diagonal line from the bottom right to the top left. Trim the excess fabric. Open and iron flat. Create all the HST units.
Lay out the block pieces as shown in the construction diagram. Follow the piecing numbers for the centre section. Finish off the block by joining the outer pieces following the arrows. Repeat to make all 42 blocks.
Sashing
Cut 8 – 3.5 x 94 inch long strips
2 – 3.5 x 107 inch long strips
35 – 3.5 x 11 inch long strips Refer to quilt construction diagram to piece quilt top together.
