BOXED CUSHION

-

Finished size 70 x 70 x 10cm

NOTE This cushion can be filled with medium-density foam or a craft fibrefill. The foam will give a square and flat profile. Fibrefill was used in this project and gives a plump, rounded look.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Cut 2 pieces of fabric 72 x 72cm for cushion front and back. Zigzag stitch around all edges.

STEP 2 For wall panel, cut 2 pieces of fabric 12 x 95cm. (Panel size will be same height as wall of cushion, and the length 1 x cushion front, plus 3/4 of cushion sides x 2, with 2cm seam allowances all around).

STEP 3 For zipper wall panel, cut two 8 x 89.5cm panels (Panel size will be half the height of cushion wall with 3cm seam allowance, and the length will be 1 x cushion back, plus 1/4 of cushion side x 2, with 2cm seam allowances). Zigzag stitch around all edges.

STEP 4 If you are using piping, attach it now. Refer to How to make and sew piping (opposite page).

STEP 5 To insert the zipper, using the 2 zipper wall panels and referring to How to sew a cushion Zipper (pg 173), join the 2 long sides of panels with a 2cm seam, inserting zipper the length of the seam.

STEP 6 With right sides facing, join short ends of zipper panel to short ends of wall panels with 1cm seams.

STEP 7 With right sides facing, pin each side of cushion wall to each side of cushion front, then stitch with 1cm seams.

STEP 8 Ensuring zipper is open for turning through and with right sides facing, pin each side of the cushion back to each side of cushion wall, then stitch with 1cm seams. Turn inside out through zipper opening.

Piping gives a sophisticated and professional finish to your cushions
