ESCAPE BOREDOM

HELP FISH

Whether fish get bored is debatable, however, science has proven aquatic pets can behave abnormally if their specific social needs aren’t met – not to mention tank size, water quality and diet. Research has also shown a lack of stimulation can trigger depression in small aquatic pets!

KEEP THEM SWIMMING Naturally curious, aquarium fish seek novel things. While they won’t chew shoes, here are a few ideas to keep them swimming!

• Ensure the tank has adequate space for Mollie and friends to grow, swim and explore.

• Learn about your fish’s breed. Try to mimic its natural habitat.

• Move rocks, plants and shells inside the tank every month.

• Change up the decorations every now and then.

• Place a ping-pong ball in the aquarium and introduce floating objects.

• Put new items, such as picture frames, outside the tank for guppies to investigate.

• Train goldfish to swim through hoops for treats! Run a finger along the glass of the fish tank. The theory is the goldfish will follow it and swim right through the hoop.

• Studies show fish can fear their reflection. Best you limit mirrors to feathered friends. For more info, speak to your local aquarium society or retail specialist.
