PAINT“ YOUR“ WAY“ TO“ A“ BRIGHT“ AND“ CHIC“ ENTRYWAY

EASY STEPS TO YOUR REVAMPED SIDEBOARD

The entry sets the tone for the rest of your home, so it’s worth putting in the e ort to make it welcoming, attractive and clutter-free. But, you don’t have to spend big bucks when you can transform budget-friendly furniture and decorations with little more than paint. Give an old sideboard and a motley crew of vases a makeover, then use cardboard to create a unique piece of wall art. The result? Monochromatic magic!

Gather your supplies

• Sideboard

• All in one primer, sealer and undercoat

• Belt leather

• Chalk paint

• Drawer liners

• 40 x 19mm timber

You’ll also need 240-grit sanding block; paint gear; combination square; scrap timber; utility knife; drill; nuts; bolts; scissors; solid nail rivets; double-sided mounting tape; glue

For you to note

Chalk paint requires little prep, but if you have a darker timber it's a good idea to apply primer first. With light-coloured timber you can go straight to chalk paint. A light sand is a good idea for older pieces that may have lumps and bumps.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Remove the drawers and doors of the sideboard. Take off any hardware, reserving a couple of knobs for the hat rack. Sand the drawer and door faces.

STEP 2 Apply primer to the drawer fronts with a paintbrush.

STEP 3 Use a paintbrush to apply primer to the frame or profile of doors, and the frame pieces.

STEP 4 Apply primer to the interior, top and sides of the sideboard using a paint roller. Leave to dry.

STEP 5 Determine size of pull handles, then measure lengths of leather to double this measurement, using a combination square. Working on scrap timber, cut with a utility knife.

STEP 6 Fold over each

length of leather and drill a hole through both layers about 10mm from ends.

STEP 7 Insert a bolt through the handle hole, and screw on the nut until ready to install.

STEP 8 Using a brush and roller, apply 2 coats of chalk paint to sideboard, and drawer and doors, allowing it to dry aƒer each coat.

STEP 9 Apply an accent colour to sides, back and inner front of drawers, plus door edges and sideboard interior so you can see it when you open drawers and doors. Leave paint to dry.

STEP 10 Insert handle bolts through holes in doors and drawers, and tighten nuts on the back.

STEP 11 Measure the interior drawer bases and cut drawer liner paper to fit. Insert paper into drawers. ReaŠach sideboard doors and insert drawers.

STEP 12 Cut a piece of timber about 40cm long to fit on the back of the front door for a decorative hat rack. Mark and drill 4 holes on the face of the rack.

STEP 13 Measure a length of leather and cut with utility knife. Drill a hole 10mm from each end.

STEP 14 AŠach leather to timber rack using rivets. Re-use original sideboard knobs as hangers on the coat rack. Apply glue to knob screws and insert in drilled holes.

STEP 15 Cut strips of double-sided mounting tape and secure to back of coat rack. Mount coat rack on the back of the front door or wall. Use it for lightweight items.
