Gather your supplies

• 42 x 19mm x 2.4m dressed pine (4)

• 42 x 42mm x 1.8m dressed pine (1)

• 1220 x 610 x 12mm marine plywood (1)

• Semi-gloss black paint an cane webbing

Here’s how

STEP 1 Use mitre saw to cut frame top, bo om and sides on a 45° angle to form mitred joins in the corners.

STEP 2 Temporarily nail or clamp 2 offcuts to your bench to form a right-angled jig to help make your frames. Use a square to make sure the angle where they meet is 90°. Spread glue along ends of a frame top, bo om and a pair of sides. Bring together then predrill across the join and nail together with 50mm nails, using your jig to hold the timber square as you

nail. Clamp together as glue dries. Repeat to create 3 more frames.

STEP 3 Glue and clamp cross rails between the top corners of 2 frames. Predrill with a countersinking drill bit and then screw through frames into cross rails using 50mm screws.

STEP 4 Place third cross rail between other ends of frames centred on the bo om. Clamp, predrill and screw together.

STEP 5 Use wood pu y to fill nail holes on frames. Also spread pu y along edges of plywood for tabletop to fill the grain. Let dry and sand smooth. Remove dust, undercoat then apply 2 coats of paint. Allow to dry and sand lightly aŒer each coat. If desired, apply a couple of coats of clear varnish to the top for extra durability.

STEP 6 Cut caning material slightly smaller than the external dimensions of the frames. Place over the 2 loose frames and staple. Sit each frame cane side up and place a joined frame over the top. Align the edges, then nail together using 30mm nails.

STEP 7 Spread glue on top edges of cross rails and frames. Place tabletop on the frames all around, then leave glue to set.

SIDE SHOW

Caning never looked so good as on this pre y li le side table! Keep it simple by building a frame and stapling the caning material onto the frame once it’s built.
