-

Add more personality to your garden with a set of bamboo gates. The gates are easy to build, you make the frames, then a ach store-bought split bamboo screening topped with timber la ice panels. Hang them on the gate posts with tee hinges and you have a statement entrance!

Gather your supplies

• Posts 90 x 90mm H4 treated pine

• Gate frames 70 x 45mm H3 treated pine

• Treated pine la ice

• 1800 x 900mm bamboo half screen (2)

• 10mm sisal rope

• 300mm long 20-30mm diameter bamboo pole (2)

You’ll also need Quick-set concrete; drill; 150 and 100mm galvanised ba en screws; circular saw; tape measure; charcoal decking stain; paintbrush; 200mm galvanised tee hinges; 50mm galvanised screws; 12mm spade bit

Here’s how

STEP 1 Here, the la ice is removed from an existing post frame. If building a new frame, use 90mm treated pine posts concreted into the ground about 900mm. Make width of the frame 1830mm, allowing for two 900mm-wide gates plus 10mm between gates and posts and 10mm between gates. Make the height of your frame 2.4m. Screw top of frame into posts, using 150mm ba en screws.

STEP 2 Cut timber using a circular saw and construct 1800 x 900mm gate frames. Screw together using 100mm ba en screws.

STEP 3 Measure diagonals of frame to ensure they are square, then lay a diagonal brace on top. Mark the inside of gate frame on brace, then cut and fit in position. Screw together.

STEP 4 Apply a coat of decking stain to frames.

STEP 5 A ach tee hinges to back of frames so strap of each hinge sits on top and bo om of frame.

STEP 6 Cut la ice to create 2 panels to go along top of frames. Screw in position with 50mm screws.

STEP 7 Cut 150mm off each end of bamboo screens to make them 1500mm high. Sit bamboo screens on gate frames. Screw between bamboo joins into gate frames to secure.

STEP 8 To make handles, thread sisal rope through each piece of 300mm bamboo. Drill holes through bamboo on gate, with a 12mm spade bit. Thread ropes through holes and knot on back of gate.

STEP 9 Hang gates on posts by screwing through hinges. Allow for 50mm clearance to the ground.

THESE HANDLES ARE SO COOL AND THERE’S NOT A SINGLE SCREW INVOLVED!
