EASY STEPS TO A FOLD-OUT BED, SHELVING AND DESK
Increase the functionality of your spare room by installing a bed that’s only there when you need it.
Gather your supplies
• Flat-pack double wall bed unit
• 18mm plywood
• Recycled fence palings
• 42 x 19mm pine
• 2250 x 600 x 30mm plywood
You’ll also need Sander; Feast Watson Liming White; painting equipment; clear varnish; drill; various drill bits; 65, 30 and 40mm wood screws; tape measure; circular saw; PVA glue; 50mm nails
For you to note
Before installation, sand and coat all plywood and palings using Liming White. When dry, apply two coats of clear varnish in a satin finish. Let dry aer each coat.
Here’s how
STEP 1 Assemble unit housing the bed according to product instructions.
STEP 2 Sit bed unit against wall in desired spot. Predrill and screw through rails at back of the unit into wall studs, using 65mm screws.
STEP 3 Install bed-folding mechanism to instructions. Aach front panel holding the bed frame to wall unit.
STEP 4 Aach full-length 18mm ply panels to sides of bed unit with 30mm screws.
Make panels extend past front of unit by about 70mm. STEP 5 On one side of bed unit, cut plywood shelves to stretch out to wall and face them by gluing and nailing strips of paling to front. Make palings extend past shelf by 18mm to sit over edge of panel on wall bed. On the wall side, sit shelves on 42 x 19mm pine baens screwed into wall studs with 60mm screws. On other end, aach similar baens
under shelves and screw through them into plywood aached to bed unit.
STEP 6 Cut plywood panel to sit on top of unit. Aach baens to face flush with 3 sides to thicken edges, then glue and nail recycled fence palings to these edges as before. Sit this completed assembly on top of the wall bed unit and screw in place with 30mm screws.
STEP 7 Cut and fit 30mm plywood to make desktop. Support back of desk with a
42 x 19mm baen screwed to wall with 60mm screws, then screw through side of the bed unit into the desk. STEP 8 Cut, glue and nail palings together to build picture shelves for front of wall bed. Make depth of the shelves such that front face will be flush with front of adjacent shelves. Screw through front of the wall bed into the shelves with 40mm screws to secure, making them level with the shelves at the side of the unit.
