Safety notes

When operating power tools, wear safety glasses, a mask, earmuffs, and tie your hair back. When appropriat­e, wear gloves and protective clothing.

Project notes

• Choose your lounge configurat­ion, adjust Components list

(page 169) to suit.

• Refer to Diagrams (page 168), then measure, mark, cut and label all components with tape measure, combinatio­n square, pencil and track saw.

• Sand all sawn edges and faces of all components with orbital sander and 80-grit. For a smoother finish, repeat with 120-grit.

• Predrill holes 30mm from ends, then space approx. 300mm in between.

• Attach off-the-shelf furniture legs to your modular sections with vertical leg plates. Predrill and attach leg plates to all corners of the sections, (plus a middle leg on the lounge for extra support), then screw on legs.

• Apply 2 coats waterbased satin varnish to all components, allow to dry after each coat. Here’s how

CHAIR/LOUNGE

STEP 1 Clamp Base to workbench and apply PVA glue to back edge of Base. Support the Back and attach it upright to the Base. With a countersin­k drill bit, predrill through Back and into back of Base. Insert screws and tighten.

STEP 2 Apply PVA glue along bottom and back edges of a Side and attach to edges of Base and Back in a butt joint. Predrill through Back and into Side, insert screws and tighten. Repeat for opposite Side (and Divider for lounge). Unclamp and flip assembly onto Back. Predrill through Base and into both Sides (and Divider).

STEP 3 Flip assembly onto Base. Apply PVA glue to top edges of both Sides (and Divider). Attach Seat flush to Back then predrill through Seat and into both Sides (and Divider), insert screws and tighten. Predrill through Back and into Seat, insert screws and tighten.

STEP 4 Apply PVA glue along back and bottom edges of an End cap. Attach flush to Seat and Back. Repeat for second End cap (and Brace for lounge). Predrill though Back and into End cap, insert screws, tighten. Repeat for second End cap (and Brace).

STEP 5 Apply PVA glue along front edge of End caps (or Brace). Attach Backrest. Predrill through Backrest and into End caps (or Brace).

ARMREST

STEP 1 Apply PVA glue onto bottom edge of Tall side, attach Base. Predrill through Base and into Tall side, insert screws, tighten.

STEP 2 Apply PVA glue onto of top edge of Short side. Attach Top, predrill through Top and into Short side. Insert screws, tighten.

STEP 3 Apply PVA glue along long edge of Top and bottom edge of Short side. Attach Base to Short side and Top to Tall side. Predrill through Top, insert screws and tighten. Flip Armrest and predrill through Base and into Short side, insert screws and tighten.

STEP 4 Determine whether armrest is for the left- or right-hand side of chair or

lounge, then attach Back accordingl­y. Apply PVA glue along short end of Top and Base, and long edge of Short and Tall side. Predrill through Back and into Top, Base and Short/tall side, insert screws, tighten.

OTTOMAN

STEP 1 Clamp Back to workbench. Apply PVA glue along 1 short end of Back, then attach a Side with a butt joint. Predrill through Side and into Back, insert screws and tighten. Repeat for other Side.

STEP 2 Apply PVA glue along top edges of both Sides and Back, attach Top. Predrill through Top and into Sides and Back, insert screws and tighten.

STEP 3 Flip. Repeat Step 2 to attach Base.

DRAWER

STEP 1 Apply PVA glue onto end of Side, attach to Front with butt joint. Repeat for other Side. Predrill through Front and into both Sides, insert screws, tighten. With Front face down, apply PVA glue onto ends of both Sides and attach Back. Predrill through Back and into both Sides. Insert screws, tighten.

STEP 2 Apply PVA glue along edges of Front, Back and Sides. Attach Base, then predrill through Base and into Front, Back and Sides.

STEP 3 Attach Face to Front with PVA glue. Predrill through Front into Face, insert screws, tighten.

STEP 4 Attach runners to bottom edge of Sides with drill and 12mm screws. Attach correspond­ing runners to inner Sides of modular pieces to connect.
