HOW MANY AIRPORTS HAVE YOU BEEN THROUGH?

-

POST BackOfThePlane DATE May 25 11:38

I appreciate that many of you have clocked up some serious miles over the years but have you ever wondered (while you wander) how many airports you’ve travelled through? What is the norm? Have most of you been to more than 100 airports around the world? Has anyone out there been to more than 200? Feel free to list them all and, of course, single out the very best and worst of them.

Bit of a slacker – only 70 (and a couple are repeat visits to a city but into a new airport such as Doha and Bangkok). Best – Changi, LHR T5 (many will disagree), HKG, Copenhagen. Worst (of the ones I remember) – Kuching (nothing there), Manchester, Jakarta, Mumbai (BA first class lounge was awful), Riyadh (nothing there), LHR T3, Manila.

I have counted 129 (including two repeats – DOH and HKG). Best – LHR T5, Seattle. Worst – Manchester T3, Miami.

I have recalled a tantalising 97, with two new ones to come in October. I must give some thought as to where to go for my 100th. Best: St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly – 30-second walk from the outdoor beer garden to the plane. Worst: Kinshasa – moved the threadbare armchair in the business lounge and two rats scuttled away across the floor.

I, very sadly, keep a record of this – 251 and counting. UK and Ireland – 33, Europe – 68, Asia-Pacific – 70, Middle East – 12, Africa – 19, North America/Caribbean – 49.

A quick tot up would suggest in the region of 70. Best for a one-off would be Boscobel Aerodrome in Jamaica – now renamed the “Ian Fleming International Airport”. Security was the pilot asking me if I had anything I shouldn’t! Worst I think would be Cebu (depressing to the extreme, but perhaps improved over the past 20-odd years) and Heraklion on the island of Crete, a dreary welcome to a wonderful island.

Not sad at all Tom! I am at 162 and NOT counting. I doubt if I will reach 200. A bizarre airport: try Seoul Gimpo.
