Tamron’s recent round of ‘Generation 2’ upgrades has seen a number of key models refreshed with new ergonomics and styling, better optics and improved specifications. The new G2 150-600mm zoom is smaller and lighter (it weighs under two kilos), with an all-new optical construction designed to optimise corrections for various lens aberrations. It also has Tamron’s latest generation ‘Vibration Compensation’ (VC) optical image stabilisation which is claimed to give up to 4.5 stops of correction for camera shake. There’s also the latest version of Tamron’s ‘Ultrasonic Silent Drive’ ring-type motor for autofocusing which improves both responsiveness and speed. Additionally, the minimum focusing distance reduced to 2.2 metres which, at 600mm, gives a magnification ratio of close to quarter lifesize. Weatherproofed? Of course.
