Getting there SeaLink operates at least four departures daily (excluding Christmas), with extra services during peak season. The ferry crossing takes 45 minutes and bookings are essential. There is also a SeaLink shuttle service that runs twice daily between the main KI towns, while SeaLink runs numerous tours for travellers who want a break from behind the wheel. The best way to get around KI is by 4WD. The main roads are sealed and suitable for 2WD, but the roads to beaches and some attractions are dirt and rutted. Be mindful of the wildlife when driving, especially at dawn, dusk and night and around roadkill, where you’ll see beautiful birds of prey.

Need to know There are a number of items you’re prohibited from taking to Kangaroo Island, including potatoes and honey. Check naturalresources.sa.gov.au for biosecurity requirements before visiting.

Playgrounds Memorial Park in Kingscote is a great spot to give the kids a break from the car, with slides, swings and climbing structures, as well as an undercover barbecue area and clean toilets. Flinders Chase National Park Visitors Information Centre also has a unique and fabulous “fossil digging” sand pit, offering something different for mini explorers. There is also a sandpit full of fun toys and a cubby house at Clifford’s Honey Farm.
