Ampfibian Weatherproof Caravan Surge Protector

- Reviewed by: JENNIFER ENNION

It’s common sense to have a surge protector when hooking your caravan up to another power source. However, the reality is that many of us don’t think about it – but we should. Even though my small, vintage caravan doesn’t have as big a draw as larger, modern caravans (with microwaves, air conditioning and the like), I find it’s still great to have the Ampfibian Weatherproof 1000J 15A Caravan Surge Protector as it offers peace of mind.

Essentially, the surge protector is a kill switch and keeps a caravan’s power sources safe if anything goes wrong when connected to 15amp mains power. You use the protector when you’re connecting your caravan or camper trailer lead to a 15amp socket to access 240 volts. The product is especially great when you pull onto a powered campsite with questionable RCDs (Residual Current Devices or safety switches), and plenty of older parks around Australia have these. The protector also has an in-built light to warn users about incorrectly wired outlets.

The product is a clever design, as the connection point for the two leads is contained within a waterproof casing. It also packs up small, a big bonus when you have limited space. Although I have a 12-foot caravan and run few appliances (including a blender and laptop), I can see how beneficial the protector would be for larger ‘vans and caravanners who mostly stay on powered sites in holiday parks. But, as I said, if nothing else, it puts your mind at ease.
