2022 Winter Olympics Venue Distribution
A total of 25 venues are expected to be used for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, located in three competition zones, namely Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou.
Beijing competition zone: There are 12 competition and non-competition venues in the area, including eight existing ones, three new ones, and one temporary one. There will be 32 events of five disciplines (curling, ice hockey, short track speed skating, figure skating, and speed skating) in three sports (curling, ice hockey, and skating) held in the Beijing competition area.
The Beijing Olympic Park is an important legacy of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and will once again become the core area of the Winter Olympics in 2022, where seven out of the 25 venues for the Winter Olympics are located. The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the National Aquatics Center (Water Cube) will host the curling and wheelchair curling competitions, the National Stadium will host the men’s ice hockey and sledge hockey competitions, the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center will host the women’s ice hockey competitions, the Capital Stadium will host the short track speed skating and figure skating competitions, and the newly-built National Speed Skating Hall will host the speed skating competitions. The Olympic Village in Beijing will accommodate 2,260 athletes and team officials.
Yanqing competition zone: There are five competition and non-competition venues in total there, hosting 20 events of four disciplines (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge) in three sports (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, and luge). The Olympic Village in Yanqing will accommodate 1,430 athletes and team officials.
Zhangjiakou competition zone: The area is located in Chongli District of Zhangjiakou City. Only 180 kilometers from Beijing, Zhangjiakou serves as the main gateway of Beijing to the west and an important passage point connecting the northwest region to the east, as well as an important part of the capital’s economic circle. Chongli District has a 20-year history of ski industry development, with five ski resorts in operation. As the leading area for the development of China’s ski industry, it is a prime destination for many ski enthusiasts in China’s neighboring countries for winter skiing and leisure vacations. There are eight competition and non-competition venues in Zhangjiakou, which will host 50 events of six disciplines (snowboarding, freestyle skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined and biathlon) under two sports (skiing and biathlon). This Winter Olympics will make full use of all the resources of the existing ski resorts, and transform them as required. The Olympic Village in Zhangjiakou will be able to accommodate 2,640 athletes and team officials.
