ZETEC TUNING

-

I’m currently building up a Zetec Silver Top engine for my Mk4 Escort and was wondering what would be the best way to go about tuning it for maximum horsepower.

I have a 2-litre block but am unsure of what else I need. I know I need an aftermarket ECU and engine mounts, but that’s about it. Can I just put a 1.8 sump on it?

Any info on building the engine up and what parts will be needed will be much appreciated. Callum Bligh Email

A “If you are after maximum horsepower from a stock Silver Top Zetec we would recommend a decompression plate and a Mk1 Focus RS Turbo and manifold,” says Mike Johnson. “You could run this on a turbo SU carb with a boost-controlled fuel pressure regulator and a MegaJolt ignition system similar to Kaleb Purdue’s old Mk1 Fiesta (above and featured in the December 2011 issue) which made 250 bhp. Or ideally opt for a standalone management like Omex, but then you will need an injection inlet manifold, all the sensors, decent fuel pumps and a swirl pot. If you run more than a Bar of boost you’ll need double valve springs as the boost pressure will open the inlet valves.” “Definitely get a 1.8 sump, dipstick and oil pick-up pipe, and before you mount this remember to put the turbo oil return into it at the right level. If you have the Omex in place then you have the room to go for more power and eventually forged internals at a later date. “There’s no end to the parts and power available out there for Zetecs — it’s more a case of how much are you willing to spend!”
