Fix or repair?

-

I noticed in a recent issue a query from a Sierra owner asking how to repair his original radio/cassette deck. If the radio is fine but the deck either doesn’t play, wrecks tapes or plays slowly, then finding a second-hand unit is difficult and not cheap.

However, here is something you can try: nine times out of 10 the drive belt is the problem as over time they can stretch or

snap. So take the unit out of the car and carefully remove the top casing. You will see the belt — discard this. You need a square section 66 mm replacement belt, this can be obtained for about £4 from Maplin (part number VX78). Clean the drive wheels with a cotton bud and something like surgical spirit, give the body of the unit a quick puff through with an air can and slip the new belt on making sure it is not twisted, and Bob’s your uncle.
