Mk6 isn’t as susceptibl­e to rust as the Mk5, particular­ly around the fuel filler cap, but there’s every chance of it being a bit crusty after at least 20 years. Look for rust around the rear arches, sunroof and rear spoiler if fitted, and along the seams of the doors and hatchback, although rust is more likely in the hidden areas, such as the sills, battery tray, bulkhead and rear chassis legs.
