Citroën GS Birotor

1973-1975

Based on a GS bodyshell with flared front wheelarches, the GS Birotor was powered by a twin rotor Wankel engine produced by Comobil, a company jointly formed between NSU and Citroën and later known as Comotor.

The Birotor’s rotary engine was capable of producing 107bhp when the needle on the tacho hit 6500rpm, a significant increase over the flat-four piston powered GS. Like its conventionally powered sibling, the front-wheel drive Birotor had disc brakes all round and hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension soaked up the bumps.

Although rumours in the motoring press hinted that a rotary powered Citroën CX was on the cards, reliability issues resulted in Birotor production coming to an end in 1975. Only 873 GS Birotors were produced and Citroën tried to buy back all the cars and destroy them, which means very few survive.
