AUSTIN MAXI

BALL JOINT WEAR

-

Q

I have a 1974 Austin Maxi with Hydrolastic suspension. On checking recently, I have found that the swivel joints on the offside upper suspension arm are worn. I intend to replace them, but wish to know if I will need to lower or adjust the pressure in the suspension system before carrying out this task as this is the procedure given in the manual I have. I am concerned that if I don’t lower the pressure in the suspension, then the Hydrolastic unit will push out too far, and if I do lower it I may be opening up a can of worms with regard to the changing of pressure and the connecting of the valve. Robert Christmas

AAlthough the workshop route where the suspension pump is readily available would be to release the pressure in the system before then jacking up and placing the vehicle on stands and stripping down the suspension to replace the upper ball joint, it is perfectly possible to carry out the task without releasing the pressure. Precautions should be taken, though. Before jacking up the vehicle, place a packing piece between the suspension top arm and the rebound rubber to ensure that when the car is jacked up, the arm will remain at around the correct level and not drop too far. Put the car on stands and use a jack to support the lower arm when the ball joint is released. Once the joint is broken, the jack beneath the lower arm can be released and then the hub should drop down. Before releasing the top joint, I would soak the two retaining bolts holding the top swivel to the hub with a penetrating oil and ensure that they are slightly loosened off. If a great deal of effort is needed to undo these bolts, this is easier with the hub in place. When fitting the new joint, the lower arm can be jacked back up until the weight of the vehicle begins to be taken and the packing piece is released. This will ensure sufficient pressure is put on the taper of the swivel before tightening up to 61 Nm.
