MOST DESIRABLE CLASSICS?
In another statistical story, by analysing data stretching back over 15 years and studying classic cars sold as well as monthly searches, average sale prices and the use of relevant hashtags on Instagram, Car & Classic (Europe’s biggest classic vehicle marketplace) has determined that the most sought-after classic car is the Porsche 911. This is one of the best known and most recognisable sports cars in the world, and undoubtedly Porsche’s most iconic car. While it has changed in many ways since its inception, its iconic silhouette has remained instantly recognisable for almost 60 years.
'Whilst a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS could set you back the best part of £500,000, there are many more affordable models which bring the average sale price of a 911 on Car & Classic to £58,000 – the third highest average selling price of any make and model on the site,' explained Dale Vinten, Head of Editorial at Car & Classic.
Intuitively we don't think this list reflects the typical Classics reader, but using the C&C measuring criteria, the top 10 classic cars were as follows:
1. Porsche 911
2. Ford Mustang
3. Range Rover
4. Chevrolet Corvette
5. Jaguar E-Type
6. VW Camper
7. Land Rover Defender
8. BMW 3-Series
9. Ford Escort
10. Mini Cooper
Meanwhile, Car & Classic also revealed that there was a substantial increase in Ford Fiesta searches over the weekend of 7th-9th July when the last Fiesta rolled off the production line. This prompted a 206% spike in searches on its online platform compared to average Fiesta searches in the four weeks prior to the announcement. Within the model’s various versions, the most interest was garnered by the Fiesta XR2 (up 107%) and the RS (up 52.1% compared to a week before).
Interestingly, Ford is still the most-searched brand on Car & Classic’s online platform, with the Escort, Capri and Cortina making up around 34% of overall Ford searches whilst the Fiesta is currently responsible for 6%. The humble Fiesta’s resurgence may even have an impact on the model’s future values, but according to C&C at the moment demand follows the same pattern to which most classic cars are sensitive, and low-mileage cars in good, unmolested condition with a documented service history continue to be sought-after.
Car & Classic typically lists around 30,000 vehicles at any one time, with a range of prices from 'no-reserve' to £10 million. Check them out at
