9. Dialling in frequency-specific snare smash

-

1 When making aggressive styles such as EDM or DnB, adding huge bottomend punch to the snare can get you a heavily smashed sound that cuts through well on a huge soundsystem. To see what we mean, import the files beginning “DnB…” from the Tutorial Files folder into any DAW and loop them up. 2 Add Melda’s MMultiband-Transient to the DnBSnare channel, then choose the Shaper (3 bands) preset from the left-hand side. Hit the Edit button, then turn off band Linking so we can adjust each individually. We’ll set the lower and upper crossover points to 120Hz and 350Hz respectively, so we can focus a band around the snare’s 200Hz area. 3 Pushing Band 2’s Attack to 4dB will add a bigger crack to our snare’s fundamental frequency. We can make this sound bigger still by pushing the Resolution up to around 80ms, making Band 2’s attack time longer for even more punch. Lastly, back off the Saturation amount to about 30%, so our snare doesn’t sound overly bloated.
