16. Old-school limiting
Here’s an old-school trick for punch: simply strap an analogue-style limiter (such as the Teletronix LA-2A or Urei 1176) across the drum bus! Due to their analogue design, these compressors can’t react instantly to loud peaks, giving a ‘hard’ edge to transients. For a general starting point, set the attack fast and the release a little slower, then adjust further depending upon your program material.
