Give your bass a dose of pro punch and power with this trio of phattening tricks

-

1 Give any standard bass a touch of chunky low-end weight by adding a subtle low-frequency EQ boost. Dialling in around 1-2dB of low boost at around

30-50Hz can add subtle yet great sounding depth and power. Reach for an analogue-style EQ for extra flavour – we’re using Kush Audio’s super-warm Hammer DSP here. 2 Adding distortion to bass can make it sound more powerful and aggressive. To avoid over-exciting the upper harmonics, low-pass-filter your bass between 100-400Hz before and after the distortion. This’ll focus processing on the bass frequencies and avoid adding any unwanted crunch in the midrange. 3 Adding power to a bass without making it sound overly crunchy can be tricky, but Slate Digital’s free Revival effect has a nifty Thickness knob that adds weight and depth without adding unpleasant upper harmonics. You don’t need much – we’ve set it to 12 to beef up the bass without overpowering the mix.
