Imposing limitations

-

The current abundance of different tools and the variety of software is a double-edged sword. It’s very easy to end up hoarding loads of plugins and instruments. This can result in a workflow where you’re using different tools and techniques in each song you make. This is bad for the continuity and consistency of your sound. I’ve struggled with this a lot, because as a part of my work, I test and go through lots of plugins.

Therefore, these days I impose limitations on myself in many different ways. Even though I try out a lot of tools, very few new ones end up making it into my real music-making workflow. If anything, I try to reduce the amount of tools I work with. When something new does make it, it’s carefully considered.

I’ve also moved more into making music in the analogue realm. The workflow of using analogue equipment imposes certain limitations in itself. It also gives me a sound that’s more unique in the day and age where most music is being made with software.

I would urge you to think carefully about your setup and impose some limitations on yourself to really get things flowing. Having boundaries helps you establish direction… and fuels creativity!
