Getting decent strings in software

-

“When creating a full-orchestra string pad, I compose chords on the keyboard, then move the MIDI into Sibelius. You’ll get richer voice leading if you follow counterpoint rules and separate the string voices. Even if you don’t want to take the time to orchestrate in a notation software, I still believe you’ll get the best result if you separate the voices into separate string channels: violin, viola, cello, etc.

“The next step is to choose the best bowing technique in the sample library. I’d highly recommend going by ear and not rushing this part, as you’ll save yourself a lot of time in the long run. Don’t feel you have to use the same technique on all the strings. For example, the sul tasto samples might sound great on cello, but legato best on violin.

“Next step is panning. I use standard orchestral panning as a starting point: violins left, violas centre, cellos right, bass far right. If you want things to gel more, go easy on the panning. After that, I solo each channel and EQ using FabFilter Pro-Q 2, bringing out the sweet spots in the different instruments and lowering problematic frequencies in the mix.

“At this point, I start the tedious process of editing my MIDI automation. I don’t randomise anything; I solo each channel and change the MIDI notes one by one. Sorry… there’s no shortcut! In Logic Pro X, the MIDI parameters are found underneath MIDI Draw in the Score Editor, which needs to be enabled under Advanced Preferences.

“It’s helpful to listen to a live string recording, to A-B the sound with your MIDI strings. The imperfections of the keyboard performance are your friend here. I never quantise the MIDI, as live players don’t sound quantised. The main two parameters are Expression and Velocity. Expression is especially useful when trying to create more realistic string attacks and decays.

“The last step for me is adding reverb – I have saved settings for single and group strings in Waves – and then I add texture with plugins like Maserati GTi. And maybe some subtle delay or phaser to create more depth. At this stage, there are no rules. After all, you’re trying to create your own string sound.

“If you have more time and money, the final step would be to record some live strings to layer on top of your MIDI strings. Even just a solo string in each section helps bring it to life.”
