2. First steps with Kilohearts Slice EQ

1 Kilohearts Slice EQ is a very versatile Mac and PC EQ which has six different types of filter, a very useful spectrum analyser, mid-side processing, click-anddrag point and dial editing and a lot more besides. Indeed, it’s one of the most fullyfeatured plugins we’ve ever given away.

2 You can adjust both the size of the plugin and the scale of various knobs and features. Simply click and drag the bottom right corner to resize it and, just to the left of this, UI Scale adjusts the size of various controls.

3 Handily, wherever you place your mouse pointer, a brief description of that feature appears at the bottom left hand corner of the screen – in this case indicating the mouse is hovering over one of the filter-type icons.

4 Slice EQ comes with a small number of presets just to get you going, but it’s easy to create your own and save them to the User area. Click on the Arrow of the Folder icon to show the existing presets. Simply click on a preset to load it up.

5 While we are on this top row, you can Undo and Redo anything using the curved arrows, compare settings, copy presets from one folder to another and remove all filter points (flatten the EQ curve to zero) with the Clear option.

6 Running up the left-hand side you get the main tool area for editing and zooming plus selections for EQ-ing in mono, stereo, or mid-side. The top tool allows you to EQ by dragging the individual points at certain parts of the frequency spectrum.

7 Slice EQ works by adjusting points across the frequency range by using these tools. Lower frequencies in a range by dragging the pointers down; increase by moving them up. You can have 32 of these filter points across the range.

8 As with most EQs, frequency increases from left to right from Hz to kHz and the amount you increase or decrease each band is measured in dB (decibels) above and below the central horizontal line.

9 The output level is determined by the Gain rotary and beneath this, the Mix dial controls the effect of the EQ so pulling it back to zero flattens the EQ curve back down to the horizontal mid/zero point.
