Outer Space

We’ve gone out of this world with our new and classic sample packs this issue. Here are two classic packs from issue 290, produced by Cyclick and Groove Criminals. Robbie Stamp from Cyclick says of his set…

“Space is the place with hits and loops to evoke the cold, eery vastness beyond our small planet. The sounds are very much in the sound design category but many will find a home as beds and incidental transition sounds in many music genres. Here’s what’s in those folders…

Cosmic Oscillations – Arturia, ARP2600 and Moog Modular through distortion, reverbs, modulation and filtering.

Event Horizon – The event horizon of a black hole. Needless to say that the Eventide Blackhole reverb was used.

Heavy Atmos Loops – Dark, brooding noise and tone mixes.

Nebula Noise – As Cosmic Oscillations, but a self-oscillating MF101 into a matching RingMod via a Moog MF Trem.

Planet Storm Loops – As Cosmic Oscillations but with a lot of noise and LF range oscillator tunings.

SciFi Drone n Tones – Buchla Easel and Synthi V through a chain of FX.

SciFi Loops – Featureless sound beds; work as they are or with FX.

SciFi Noise Hits – The Buchla Easel and the Synthi V into a long FX chain.”

The Final Frontier

Maintaining the deep and spacey feel, Oli Bell from Groove Criminals says of his space-age Vault collection:

“We’re travelling through the cosmos into the deep reaches of the universe for these samples. All our basic tones were taken from our Eurorack modular gear (for the drones, percussion hits and effects) or various softsynths stacked and blended together (for the multis, drones and atmosphere samples).

“We also used lots of reverb, a mixture of both hardware and software. EHX Ocean 11 and Old Blood Noise Minim pedals provided shimmers, reverse and tremolo hardware reverb. On the software side we leaned heavily into Valhalla’s DSP Shimmer verb for those chiming, deep, mysterious reflections.”
