Since 2004, the Snowy Hy­dro scheme has been ‘ cloud­seed­ing’ to in­crease pre­cip­i­ta­tion and re­fill reser­voirs faster. In the right con­di­tions, aero­planes re­lease tiny par­ti­cles of sil­ver io­dide into the at­mos­phere. These par­ti­cles, with a sim­i­lar crys­tal struc­ture to ice, cause mois­ture in the air to freeze around them, mak­ing snow.
