THIS MONTH, READERS SHARE HOW READING ABOUT COUNTRY LIFE HAS MADE THEM SMILE AND FEEL AT HOME, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.
JOYFUL GETAWAY
We all need an escape from the everyday once in a while, and while I may live in Sydney, my heart seems to reside in the country. My favourite part of Country Style is Annabelle Hickson’s offerings. What a treat in the August issue to have the extra story from her about Yamba. Her honesty and delightful observations and humour must endear her to many of your readers. I also love the new addition of ‘The Style Diaries’. I hope you will keep this in, as it’s the most refreshing idea I’ve seen in a while. Bernadette Ryan, BAULKHAM HILLS, NSW
MY PIECE OF AUSTRALIA
Country Style was always a familiar face, appearing in our old mailbox every month. Mum would always find a way to weave the latest stories into our daily conversations. As I sit here in my new apartment in Los Angeles, overlooking unfamiliar rocky hills, I come to the realisation I’ve traded foggy mornings for Californian sun, the sound of the kookaburra for the whirl of a siren, homemade cupcakes for takeaway lattes. I notice there is a book zipped into the lining of my suitcase. I pull out this month’s issue of Country Style, realising Mum had snuck it into the pocket the morning she drove me to Sydney Airport. My piece of Australia, my symbol of comfort from my mum. A familiar face in this new chapter of my life. So, Country Style, I thank you both for teaching me that dreams really are worth reaching for and also that sometimes all we need is your magazine to make us feel at home. THE SIMPLE PLEASURES
I have always enjoyed reading Country Style, but imagine my delight to find an article on Yamba. I was born in Grafton on the Clarence River, and in the late 1940s, my parents built a holiday cottage in Clarence Street, Yamba. All our holidays were spent there and it has always remained in my memory as the perfect place. It was so nice to read that Annabelle Hickson felt the same way so many years later. I’m grateful to have the photos, as mine are fading, and I’m grateful that in this materialistic age, current generations are enjoying the simple pleasures we once knew.
