FARMERS’ MARKETS

-

WA Northam Farmers’ Market, December 9th Northam may only be 90 minutes north-east of Perth, but it’s far enough away from the city’s hustle and bustle to retain a country town feel. This is wheat and sheep country; big skies, undulating hills and perfect hot-air ballooning territory. The market, which has been operating for little more than a year, was an instant hit with locals who were thrilled to be able to buy locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables. They are also partial to Koojedda Country’s pickles and preserves, made with fruits and vegetables that owner Coral Mencshelyi grows herself. Customers travel from miles away to buy the popular Lil’s Shortbread. Expect a bit of Christmas fun with the sound of carols floating in the morning air. Village Green, 174 Fitzgerald Street, Northam. 8.30am–1pm. 0400 473 890; northamfarmersmarket.com

River and Wren Boutique Market, December 10th This makers market very quickly established itself as the place in the Riverina to buy quality handmade wares when it started three years ago. The mantra is handmade, homemade and homegrown, which means artists, makers and producers sit side by side. However, at the Christmas market, the food producers of the region are getting special treatment when, for the first time, they will have a dedicated hall. Everything you need for the festive table will be available, from West Walla Farm’s pastured eggs to beef, pork and lamb from Wagga Farm Gate Butchery. Pick up olives and oil from Wollundry Grove Olives, salad dressings and sauce from Seed: Food with Love, sweet treats from That Macaron Lady, and Christmas cakes and pudding from Simple Pleasures. Plus, native flowers from Karrindee Blooms. Wagga Wagga Showground, Bourke Street, Wagga Wagga. 10am–3pm. 0409 152 187; riverandwrenmarkets.com.au
