KATE GOODHEW KEEPS IT SIMPLE AS SHE GETS READY TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WITH HER FAMILY ON A PROPERTY OUTSIDE OF MOREE.
With two sets of young twins, Kate Goodhew is looking forward to celebrating Christmas with family and friends on a Moree property in NSW.
FOR MOREE-BASED CATERER and mother of four Kate Goodhew, Christmas is all about family and good food. She’ll spend the day with her husband Simon and their two sets of twins, five-year-old Frankie and Oscar, and three-year-old Elke and Willa, as well as her parents and sisters who live close by. “Our family loves to share food. My grandmother Mac would often have an hour’s notice that we were visiting and in that time, she’d make a table laden with food for us. Her pumpkin scones were my favourite,” the 38-year-old says.
Kate grew up on a cotton farm near Moree and was immersed in cooking from a young age, including helping to make the plum pudding, which would begin three months before Christmas with the soaking of the fruit. “As kids, we’d make the pudding with Mum and throw in the sixpence and threepence, making a wish as we stirred them in,” she says.
After high school in Sydney, Kate studied commercial cookery and did an apprenticeship with Simmone Logue. She worked in catering for seven years. In 2011 Kate and her husband Simon married and returned to Moree, before moving to Dirranbandi in Queensland and then back to Moree a year ago. They now live on a dryland and irrigated farm 40 kilometres east of town which Simon, 38, manages.
In 2015, Kate teamed up with her friend Toby Osmond to start a catering business with a focus on local produce for events such as the Gravesend 100 Mile Lunch as well as weddings and dinner parties.
“I love that we are there for people’s big milestones in life. Food brings people together and everyone around here appreciates that,” she says.
