ABOUT THE HOUSE

-

• The exterior cladding is golden cypress, chosen by the Fewsons because it is a sustainably farmed timber.

• David and Jane were determined to use recycled and reclaimed materials wherever possible. There are more than 15 salvaged timbers used in the house, including yellow teak, crows ash, coachwood, white gum, ironbark, tallowwood, blackbutt, white beech and rosewood.

• The kitchen cabinetry is made from salvaged white beech, which has been cut into strips and made into joinery by a local cabinet-maker.

• The flooring in the downstairs open-plan living space is the original concrete slab, which has been polished to expose the aggregate, and treated with an epoxy coating.

• The banisters of the staircase are made from old copper piping that has been recycled.

• Most of the furniture is second-hand, obtained from op shops and garage sales. Some items have been salvaged from the tip: “When we renovated our previous home —a limestone cottage in Fremantle — it was my job to take loads to the tip,” says Jane. “Every time I took a load, I’d come back with items of furniture. On one occasion, I found our two enormous armchairs. Luckily, David liked them too; we sanded them, reupholstered them and we still love them.”

• A former upstairs verandah has been enclosed to create a long, rectangular room the Fewsons call the ‘winter room’ because it soaks up the sun in winter. This has become a favourite room for collected treasures and artworks.

• The property is located close to beaches, Nightcap National Park, rainforest walks and Killen Falls.
