WEEKEND AWAY
VICTORIA
The Provincial Hotel It’s the little things that really matter at this hotel. Walking in off the street to check in, the first thing you notice is the alluring scent of a candle. Fresh flowers that are collected and delivered by owner Gorgi Coghlan’s father overflow vases in every room. On the walls, the artworks exhibited are only by female artists. Antiques — restored or reupholstered — feature in every room and give a hint of the age of this beautiful, historic building.
Originally built in 1909 and recognised by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), The Provincial Hotel was bought and sensitively transformed into a stylish boutique hotel in 2018 by Gorgi and her husband, Simon. Each room has been individually styled by Gorgi, with over-sized bedheads upholstered in bold fabrics. In the bathrooms, bath and body products from local company Grampians Goods Co and Al.k.me therapeutic roller oils in various fragrances are another thoughtful touch.
And be sure your stay includes dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Lola, named in honour of Lola Montez, a well-known dancer, actress and comic during the gold rush, which brought Ballarat to prominence. Indulge in the signature spritz made with Lola Larrikin Gin, a collaboration between the restaurant and Kilderkin Distillery, located a short drive away. The food menu relies on top-quality, locally sourced produce. From $160 per night, twinshare. 121 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, (03) 5331 3399, theprovincialballarat.com.au
