PRODUCTS FOR THE PLANET
Update your beauty buys to help the world stay beautiful. Pictured, facing page, from left:
• The new Pure Planet Club Organic Lip Balms with nourishing cocoa and shea butter in compostable, uncoated post consumer waste paper packaging. Try them in raspberry, mint, vanilla or natural ($30 for a three pack).
• Plastic toothbrushes take over 400 years to decompose and Australians throw away about 30 million every year. Brushes with compostable bamboo handles are a great alternative; just remember to remove the nylon bristles before tossing them in the garden. Try Perth-based brand Thinc Eco Adult and Kids Bamboo Brushes ($19.95 for two kids and two adult brushes).
• If you prefer your beauty products plastic-free (including microplastics and synthetic polymers like polyethylene glycols used as thickeners in hair and skincare), look to the Weleda collection of face, body and baby care, created with herbs, flowers and plants like calendula, wild rose, evening primrose and almond. Return empty packaging and Terracycle will recycle it into products like children’s play equipment. Try Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream ($27.95 for 30ml).
• Using zinc and titanium as the active ingredients,
The Ordinary Suncare Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants ($13.90 for 50ml) doesn’t use octinoxate and oxybenzone (the chemical ingredients to be banned in Hawaii from next year). Available in Australia from Deciem in May.
• Biossance has blacklisted more than 2000 ingredients from their products but sugarcane isn’t one of them, so they have created a vegan, sugarcane-derived EWG verified 100 per cent Squalane Oil ($50 for 100ml).
• Try replacing your bottles of shampoo and conditioner with ph-balanced, soap-free Nuebar. Handmade in Sydney without any plastic, palm oil, sulphates or silicones, they do have lashings of lovely oils and botanicals to leave your hair healthy and soft. Try Nuebar Shampoo Bar in Dry or Damaged Hair ($23 for 90g) and Conditioner in All Hair Types ($22 for 70g). Each bar lasts around 80–90 washes.
