Make a… cushion

-

Choose your cushion fabric colour by picking out your favourite shade from the design itself

Step 1

NOTE that the finished size of your cushion will be 33x35.5cm (13x14in). Cut your stitched aida cushion front so that there is 2.5cm (1in) of blank aida around the design. Pin your front panels around the edge of the aida, leaving 1.25cm (½in) of blank aida, and using a 1.25cm (½in) seam allowance.

Step 2

SEW each panel in place, making sure you do not stitch over the corresponding panel as you work. The stitching should start and finish at exactly the same point in each corner. Fold the cushion from corner to corner, right-sides facing, matching up the two border panels, so the ends are together. Place a ruler along the fold of the cushion and over the border panel. Using a pencil, make a line across the panel from the corner to the outer edge of the fabric. Pin and then stitch on this line. Cut off the excess fabric, and then open out the seam before pressing. Turn to the right side and you will have made a neat mitred corner for your cushion. Repeat for the other three corners.

Step 3

LAY the two back cushion pieces on the table so that they are in the correct position to fit the back of the cushion. Neaten the overlapping edge on both pieces, by folding over twice, and then machine stitch the seams in place.

Step 4

PLACE the cushion front and backs right-sides together on the table. Pin, then machine stitch the layers together, with a 1.25cm (½in) seam allowance. Reduce the seam allowance, then neaten the seams. Turn to the right-side, and insert cushion pad.
