The new year is upon us. What an electric time of year! The air is chilly, the sun sets early, and a feeling of change is in the air. I am a suck er for times of change. I always feel that old familiar buzzing feeling in the air around the beginning of summer–traditionally when school lets out–as well as in the autumn, when school traditionally begins. Of course, the coup de grâce of change and renewal comes at the start of a new year.

Something that has always interested Spencer, my husband, and I, about Stitch People is that our sales often pickup in January! This is really unusual. Typically, retail-oriented businesses can expect to see a drop in sales after the holiday season. People aren’ t out and about frantically buying gifts for others and, well let’s just be honest, they’ ve likely just spent way too much money buying presents for others.

But at Stitch People, we’ve noticed an up tick in sales at the start of the year! I have a theory about that.

I believe that people start off the new year with a few things in mind. 1. It’ s nice to stay cosy when it’ s freezing outside, so people are ho ling up indoors, and are focusing on indoor activities that are sit–by–the– fire–with–a–blanket–and–hot–cup– of–tea-friendly. 2. At the start of the new year, people feel are solve to jump into something like anew hobby or fresh en up an old skill. 3. People like to pull out the gifts they’ ve received during the holidays and use them, or admire them.

Stitch People caters to each of these elements of starting off the new year. As you all know, crossstitching is a lovely pas time for sitting by the fire and sipping a hot cup of tea .* Plus, Stitch People offers small, personalised projects for new and old stitch er sal ike, so they aren’ t overwhelming, and have a touch of personal charm. Lastly, our books and family portraits are often given as holiday gifts, and often the receiver of the gift is ready to jump in and learn how to make one themselves!

Do you have any plans to jump into Stitch People this new year? No matter your answer, I hope 2018 brings you all the happiness and joy you hope for! As always, if you have received a Stitch People portrait or gave one as a gift this holiday season, post your successes on Ins tag ram or Facebook and tag @Stitch People because we love to see what everyone creates.

*I was thinking a lot about sitting by the fire with a cup of tea as I designed this month’ s pattern. So I used calm colours, with a splash of energy, and an aura of traditional sweater and quilt designs. Cosy! Happy New Year! Lizzy
