Cross Stitcher

CROSS STITCH WEEK

We chatted with Barbara Thompson of Cross Stitch Week, Shepherds Dene, to find out what’s in store on a stitching course such as hers…

Tell us about your course!

Our course runs from Sunday (evening meal and introduction) to Thursday, closing with tea and cake at 3.30pm.

Shepherds Dene is an Arts and Crafts House set in 20 acres of beautiful Northumberland woodland and gardens. There are 18 bedrooms and we usually take over the whole house. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing and all the food is simple, home cooked and delicious.

Who should come?

Everyone is welcome, from the advanced stitcher to the beginner, and people soon find that there is no competition involved, only pleasure in stitching amongst helpful and sharing people who soon become friends. We have a new theme each year and I provide ideas, designs and materials, although there is always scope for people to experiment with their own designs.

What should people bring?

Most stitchers have their own favourite bits and pieces of equipment which they bring, such as stands, lights and threads, and a pair of scissors and pencil with a rubber on the end are always useful, though none of these things are essential.

What is the atmosphere like?

Very relaxed and inviting, so people feel that they are getting away from the hassles of normal life to meet up with others who share their love of stitching. Many friendships have been formed.

There is always the opportunity to take time out for rest or contemplation in a quiet corner, or go for a stroll in the gardens. And if the weather is good we sometimes sit out on the garden terrace to stitch and chat.

How should people get ready?

Come prepared to develop your skills whilst relaxing with friendly, like-minded others, and come prepared for fun and good food too!
