Make a… fringe edging

-

Step 1

START on one of the short sides of your afghan. First, strip away the threads laying horizontally across your fringe, right up to the double border row that is around the designs. Next, use a large needle to tease out one thread at a time and working from the centre, pull from one side to the other to remove each thread. Repeat until all the threads on this edge of the blanket are removed, before moving on to the other sides.

Step 2

WORK on one side of the blanket at a time and separate the threads into groups of four. If any of the corner threads start to peel away, just tease each back into the correct position. Once you have got nearly all the threads on one side of the blanket sorted into fours, you will be able to see how many odd threads you have left on that edge. Just add the extra threads to the remaining groups, to keep them roughly the same.

Step3

START from a corner and make a knot using two groups of four threads. Take the right-hand bundle over and then under the left-hand bundle, then bring the thread end out in the loop made by the threads. Pull the threads gently and evenly, so that the knot sits tightly against the border. Adjust the knot if needed to get each one sitting neatly in roughly the same position on the blanket edge.

Step 4

WORK with the same two bundles as before; take the left-hand bundle over the right and then bring the thread ends up and through the loop. Gently pull the threads so that the knot tightens against the border. Repeat until all the bundles have been knotted together, and then adjust each, so that the bundles and knots lie in the same position. Repeat on the other three sides of the blanket.
