Maya Angelou had the gift of bringing people together – do the same with cross stitch, says Jess…

Hullo! With the pace of the world these days, it can be hard to feel as though you’ re apart of the wider world. I know that I sometimes feel very isolated working from home and it’ s times like these that I turn to words that can lift me up above the bad feelings. In that vein, this month’ s historical power house of a woman reminds us of the power of human connection and the human spirit. That woman is Maya An ge lou.

Angelou was a poet, writer, dancer, singer, civilactivist, and autobiographer. Whew, what a list! She grew up in the southern United States with her brother and paternal grandmother. Despite an incident of abuse and against the racism of her country, she flourished artistic ally, developing a love of language and some serious dancing feet.

Focusing on themes of race, social justice, the strength of women, and the human spirit, Angelou’s written works remind us of the importance of togetherness and benevolence. That it’ s possible to be strong and kind, and that it benefits us all to help and support each other and to, in turn, be supported ourselves.

I’ ve found cross stitch has provided so much good in my little corner of existence, mostly through the connections I have made with others. Whether it’ s an online forum, a professional collaboration, or a stitchy meet-up, it has given me some of the most beautiful humans.

We come from all walks of life and despite any differences we may have in opinion, belief, or lifestyle, cross stitch has been a medium for us all to connect and flourish together. I’ve never failed to learn something or

have my heart lightened when I get together with my stitching crew and it reminds me that there’ s a lot of good in this world.

The Stitch People community have given me so much positive feedback and support. So, if you’ re feeling a little disconnected, perhaps what you need is across-stitch-get-together-and-some good old fashioned chit-chat. I know it does me the world of good! Happy stitching! Jess
