Cross Stitcher

Make a… bag

-

Step 1

STITCH the design using four strands for the cross stitch and four strands for the half cross stitch, working each stitch over four fabric threads. Work the half cross stitch in di erent directions in the same way as for the purse. The backstitch is worked in two strands.

Step 2

CUT your fabric to 39.5x32cm (15x12½in), with the design central from left to right, leaving approximately 12.5cm (5in) of blank fabric above the design, to allow for the turning on the top edge. Cut the backing fabric to the same size.

Step 3

FROM the remaining backing fabric, cut two pieces 25.5x7.5cm (10x3in) for the handles. Fold each strip so that it is 2.5cm (1in) wide, with the overlap at the back and the raw edges tucked inside. Press, and then catch stitch the seam down the middle using matching sewing thread.

Step 4

PLACE the bag front and back right-sides together, and then stitch around the edge leaving the top open. Neaten the seams, then turn to the right side and press. Fold over the top edge by 4cm (1½in), and then fold under 1.25cm (½in). Tack in place. Position the handles at the top of the bag, on the reverse side, with the raw handle edges folded under. On the right side, stitch around the top of the bag, securing the top seam. Stitch a square with a cross in the centre to hold each handle end firmly to the bag.
